Courtenay grew up in the countryside in the shadow of the Canadian Rockies. He trained at Vancouver's Studio 58 theatre school and has become a versatile performer on stage and screen. He works often in 'physical theatre' and his varied stage career has taken him all over the world. He often tours the silent solo show, 'The Pianist' to theatres in Europe and Asia.
